Looking into my log I was surprised to find I had 10 BC ski days in the 2021 part of the 2021/2022 season. Given how funky and on and off the beginning of the season was, one would have needed to be in a compromising mood to get to 10 given those circumstances. </p><p>This was a brisk ski with 2 degrees F and a decent breeze on the ridge. However, the snow was perfect; cold, dry, and fast. Here are a couple of pictures of that outing (click to enlarge):</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjIa2D8dzYCW2PDeup3JoSej41OxKMLF4glCd43F0C4sbW4aG2sCX3MlMqFcG6pRnp0UksdTtPGa0c32ov2U5YUe4ee7wRsiSe0cx6GJw62ijwXo86iQH8yfrvDlr5Y8-3Sa9-ONl6IjmtVAabTC894AH5X_BtIGgmT8ezEXWvZp_eu7xy0qc1RQCdKHQ=s4705" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4705" data-original-width="3529" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjIa2D8dzYCW2PDeup3JoSej41OxKMLF4glCd43F0C4sbW4aG2sCX3MlMqFcG6pRnp0UksdTtPGa0c32ov2U5YUe4ee7wRsiSe0cx6GJw62ijwXo86iQH8yfrvDlr5Y8-3Sa9-ONl6IjmtVAabTC894AH5X_BtIGgmT8ezEXWvZp_eu7xy0qc1RQCdKHQ=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Loki enjoying the winter wonderland.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbugDuOFIwAsBaEnsEYOO7c7jx51qoOW65ewznC7sJr_Uuy44ObgMI0VQ26wk-LogO0Y9TKWSi2-Ypo-DZcZqlCbPCS-F1CAhMuxPxHLqMfIxcftgi1gzQdmd4UBZRNYQXiBt3Uh8FyJxIzKjlXJI9Ge6a6Ai1fXiUdtjPNOtRadRMgRXAFVgasxeY5Q=s5184" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhbugDuOFIwAsBaEnsEYOO7c7jx51qoOW65ewznC7sJr_Uuy44ObgMI0VQ26wk-LogO0Y9TKWSi2-Ypo-DZcZqlCbPCS-F1CAhMuxPxHLqMfIxcftgi1gzQdmd4UBZRNYQXiBt3Uh8FyJxIzKjlXJI9Ge6a6Ai1fXiUdtjPNOtRadRMgRXAFVgasxeY5Q=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View of the "backside" of Mt Superior with Cardiac Ridge.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh7D_01dKZb0O_R6cFvjd5Fm-9MJMXO7pHrwwWIZ8GcW88fDgUuwv7OlGATl0R64cQY7YknTpDoU-rgL-YsKRmkCAFQOoOQ2OXeBcWcgqvEgdklDy4wSrvz3da7xyLUo1AnrjauiOXWxkCRb_LFeFqqagHPBoeppANraxJ_CSxT06ZdEJixmsnaNRxGNg=s5184" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEh7D_01dKZb0O_R6cFvjd5Fm-9MJMXO7pHrwwWIZ8GcW88fDgUuwv7OlGATl0R64cQY7YknTpDoU-rgL-YsKRmkCAFQOoOQ2OXeBcWcgqvEgdklDy4wSrvz3da7xyLUo1AnrjauiOXWxkCRb_LFeFqqagHPBoeppANraxJ_CSxT06ZdEJixmsnaNRxGNg=w400-h300" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Murdock Peak in the middle and, to its left, North Bowl.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11033519757551708324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6997300292856098097.post-26170678832841153712021-11-26T18:50:00.001-07:002021-11-26T18:50:32.541-07:00Back to the Canyons<p>Today I went back to The Canyons where there is now a bit more artificial snow than last time I went but quite a bit less of the natural snow further up. It started as Park City West in 1968, then became ParkWest, then Wolf Mountain which, as a name, was deemed not family-friendly enough by new owners and so was renamed The Canyons in 1997. After Vail Resorts took it over, pursuant to the disastrous Talisker ownership, it renamed it to the somewhat awkward Canyons Village at Park City.</p><p>In any case, that's where I was doing a reconnaissance hike yesterday to scope out Boa trying to assess the snow cover on that shaded slope. I did a loop so hiked up under the Condor Express lift and back down over Boa. The report is... no snow! In most spots on high Boa, there was a couple of inches, if that, and nothing on the rest. This means we will be fully dependent on new snowfall for any pre-season skiing to be possible on that slope.</p><p>In the meantime, even though it was 36⁰ F when I started my hike, snowmaking was in full swing both at the base and higher up closer to the Park City ridgeline. It seems the Thanksgiving pressure is on! Here are a couple of pictures (click to enlarge):</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZA9e2uJtOoFs8ywj7Y2A9IqZPzFIDgX013hsFM6ou_QjRTrplfxALcHRxaAkAzD0PiWPqDz5du0tOn8uDP92kLmRKImgQOuJ1FoEnXuH1u_GM2QnZkm9i8Mo9FbLUC1OFbrjOrYqPqkkd/s5063/1.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3797" data-original-width="5063" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZA9e2uJtOoFs8ywj7Y2A9IqZPzFIDgX013hsFM6ou_QjRTrplfxALcHRxaAkAzD0PiWPqDz5du0tOn8uDP92kLmRKImgQOuJ1FoEnXuH1u_GM2QnZkm9i8Mo9FbLUC1OFbrjOrYqPqkkd/w400-h300/1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Snowmaking at the base...</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5AP8QEOv3ovPGplQOhHTRRZlRyCjrG5vUkrmUTdPDCVHAMa1FBnJFaV7DbY9exhGDjoS5CQ0PlY1LDyus4Ms143mNHisSuMEPyoET7u7DvY1xmX20X8_HPmnJEyNxceAvGhyeG2DMxyK1/s5184/2.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5AP8QEOv3ovPGplQOhHTRRZlRyCjrG5vUkrmUTdPDCVHAMa1FBnJFaV7DbY9exhGDjoS5CQ0PlY1LDyus4Ms143mNHisSuMEPyoET7u7DvY1xmX20X8_HPmnJEyNxceAvGhyeG2DMxyK1/w400-h300/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...at mid-mountain...</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKX8a7Uv9Ot0naqcljTfprI-0_JacJvPCDa-Jjq9RsO5Hxmj8bitv8OF_Lx-b9Hm597SazSjjI82nEuChyphenhyphen-pp0jFSXlzbP5BUeqtLXqIa4UXRMBag0KyZHyHw6aJbfkMgxYyNrXvPeTGDt/s5184/3.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKX8a7Uv9Ot0naqcljTfprI-0_JacJvPCDa-Jjq9RsO5Hxmj8bitv8OF_Lx-b9Hm597SazSjjI82nEuChyphenhyphen-pp0jFSXlzbP5BUeqtLXqIa4UXRMBag0KyZHyHw6aJbfkMgxYyNrXvPeTGDt/w400-h300/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...and up by the ridgeline.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11033519757551708324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6997300292856098097.post-43390123778749815962021-11-12T22:28:00.006-07:002021-11-13T13:03:16.418-07:00November ski in the Cirque at Snowbird<p>After the last storm, the Cirque at Snowbird is holding 1.5 to 2 feet, and at the most privileged spots, even more. Not bad for early November! Yesterday when I got to the trailhead the temp was 31F at 8,500' and outright brisk close to 11,000' so not only is the coverage good (I didn't hit a single rock) but the snow quality was great. Unfortunately, most of what we have now will end up being the weak facetted layer of the first half or so of the upcoming winter. So if we are lucky enough to see a drastic weather pattern change soon here, then we will likely be looking forward to a fair amount of avalanche activity. In any case, here are a few pictures of peaks approachable from any of the central Wasatch tri-canyon area i.e. Mill Creek, Big and Cottonwood Canyon, and Little Cottonwood Canyon (click to enlarge):</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO3FOeSvlHy2R9-SWOIUp2w9moBveWR1oLW-Zq-TFhfvg1WO-POruFfIZfIz1E39F_VGV4Wae1lhDr7AXjzHMZxkzyHvFdcR7qocEC9D5BqOWZeFHeW7U-sVnbxzzCpuAXOax31AyZdOuI/s2048/1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1222" data-original-width="2048" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO3FOeSvlHy2R9-SWOIUp2w9moBveWR1oLW-Zq-TFhfvg1WO-POruFfIZfIz1E39F_VGV4Wae1lhDr7AXjzHMZxkzyHvFdcR7qocEC9D5BqOWZeFHeW7U-sVnbxzzCpuAXOax31AyZdOuI/w400-h239/1.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mt Superior, Cardiac Bowl, and Cardiac Ridge, <br />all best accessed from LCC.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4qTAZ-740bS7X98sorm38MEWMF8_ZbUyPrc9gpBx7_OGj7l6-kOszK4UdISr1OY779-vwhSnOsY43CD3QfoQIHgpJBVMtm1vjqPce_7A0TF4NkC_rxN9OaNY4aYS8BlWr4yMzEZ972VoE/s5184/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4qTAZ-740bS7X98sorm38MEWMF8_ZbUyPrc9gpBx7_OGj7l6-kOszK4UdISr1OY779-vwhSnOsY43CD3QfoQIHgpJBVMtm1vjqPce_7A0TF4NkC_rxN9OaNY4aYS8BlWr4yMzEZ972VoE/w400-h300/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sundial and Dromedary Peak, typically<br />accessed from BCC Mill B South.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzM8RY4T7sFJE5EAIT9ns7m3JDmwbW3a_mt7kfMNDqKJCjjp-pY87ai65mTaaNZAl71pUxvZzorLdz2Nmys16wHnEsIsI_Yqk4V2JUyQuz5vXFRuNpg8a0aN9zfxVL1a1VSHqNMrzq7LKw/s5184/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3888" data-original-width="5184" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzM8RY4T7sFJE5EAIT9ns7m3JDmwbW3a_mt7kfMNDqKJCjjp-pY87ai65mTaaNZAl71pUxvZzorLdz2Nmys16wHnEsIsI_Yqk4V2JUyQuz5vXFRuNpg8a0aN9zfxVL1a1VSHqNMrzq7LKw/w400-h300/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Wilson Peak and Gobbler's Knob accessible<br />from BCC or Mill Creek Canyon.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11033519757551708324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6997300292856098097.post-2177937567823207122021-10-28T15:19:00.005-06:002021-11-01T12:40:47.067-06:00Snowbird has a ton of snow!<p>For an October ski, I was surprised at how much snow Snowbird is holding. Having said that, it seems every time I've been to Snowbird in October, I'm always surprised at how much snow I find there. Today it was a little over six inches at 8,600 feet (next to Blackjack Village) and close to two feet at 10,000 feet. Before these latest storm systems moved in over the last couple of weeks there was hardly any snow to speak of on the ground. Until then, my best skiing was in November! Now after a couple of weeks, I am back to being BC ski-in-ski-out right from my deck.</p><p>Here is a screenshot of the Utah Avalanche Center's "black widow":</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCDFO0yh7f6MffzKzRC1mkX9nU85Lib9y3gEDkaaIZMag7LPUg2Ta6VFvJ-pmzSzBU3MXnkYWOvEi2heGSv4i3bnGwKUpLp7Ht_gO9OTjJk5uppYSPDD_vRvUOsWeHR0giHL7p-oaswCs7/s2048/Black+Avalanche+Rose.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1328" data-original-width="2048" height="416" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCDFO0yh7f6MffzKzRC1mkX9nU85Lib9y3gEDkaaIZMag7LPUg2Ta6VFvJ-pmzSzBU3MXnkYWOvEi2heGSv4i3bnGwKUpLp7Ht_gO9OTjJk5uppYSPDD_vRvUOsWeHR0giHL7p-oaswCs7/w640-h416/Black+Avalanche+Rose.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The black widow. We obviously need to pray a lot harder or smarter than we have been so far, and maybe brush up on the rain-dance moves or something cause we need a lot more snow on the ground. Fast. Looking at the forecast, Friday may be a bit hopeful and after that the whole of the following week. None of it looks like major precipitation yet but 1) as we get closer the percentage chances may increase, and 2) it makes it look like the high-pressure system that has put a lid on incoming systems for some weeks now may finally be crumbling. So here is to hopin... </p><p>In the meantime, there is still room for some fun in the snow skiing facets on the north-facing. The catch is that the approaches are now getting quite long for first tracks on good cover although, on occasion, that can be resolved too (see below). So that's just about the only the good news with these conditions that are offering a really poor start to the winter. The less good part is how much approaching you have to do while avoiding, as best as possible, anything facing south. This is true of both the approach and the exit. Bottom line, if you want untouched good lines you need to be ready to travel 4 - 5 times as much distance as you ski. If you are willing to do that, you will be rewarded with both first tracks and solitude.</p><p>The pictures are from yesterday in upper Silver Fork.</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXEEGp91T66EGN2waor6JcB3O-lE7swW38vfK03Mwcu8nzScujhU_ErEAKTqcvII5YxIEeH6UP-AZIdO6VW8BiByMXb4Tx9ahh6USA_fEwMtzRZ-9PuOq4lnSaIMlWlrWoJuPQHi-TT5St/s2048/1.JPG" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXEEGp91T66EGN2waor6JcB3O-lE7swW38vfK03Mwcu8nzScujhU_ErEAKTqcvII5YxIEeH6UP-AZIdO6VW8BiByMXb4Tx9ahh6USA_fEwMtzRZ-9PuOq4lnSaIMlWlrWoJuPQHi-TT5St/w300-h400/1.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">We found first tracks on looker's right, from <br />under the rocks to the trees.</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvHpnoz-d4z8jRdbFuKBwbjt60w599dF1Ta0udLfIc5buaoEw8JSWoztzV1LLQTCK-_Q8wyvlQUCoL7UH2KMhL90a5SA8t1C04WzmeucHXwT0mPG_mKEpaH8WSxjO4Wt058Yj1d_10U3dO/s2048/2.JPG" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvHpnoz-d4z8jRdbFuKBwbjt60w599dF1Ta0udLfIc5buaoEw8JSWoztzV1LLQTCK-_Q8wyvlQUCoL7UH2KMhL90a5SA8t1C04WzmeucHXwT0mPG_mKEpaH8WSxjO4Wt058Yj1d_10U3dO/w400-h300/2.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Mike farming turns...</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSysIsMeUBRpIAVDwzkJHNGYR6bZpMBN6a9b_8TzO3g0BPO88GpuEW_V775tpnf4UW6OCTWNtJspLjhrj06S9bCMueyTEZs4EFkk2Fjzl-JNnP4-06IGXYy0rGg5HYr2h-r7bIzDmWv3LW/s1622/3.jpg" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1055" data-original-width="1622" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSysIsMeUBRpIAVDwzkJHNGYR6bZpMBN6a9b_8TzO3g0BPO88GpuEW_V775tpnf4UW6OCTWNtJspLjhrj06S9bCMueyTEZs4EFkk2Fjzl-JNnP4-06IGXYy0rGg5HYr2h-r7bIzDmWv3LW/w400-h260/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...as well as your's truly. After the false start a couple of weeks ago it mostly has been too warm and marginal amounts of precipitation at best. Having said that the last mini storm did improve skiing conditions (in places spectacularly) on mid-to-high mountain north-facing snow traps. The trick is to find ones that are not all skied out. This will involve longer approaches and only the ones that know how to keep a secret will keep enjoying them. Here are some pictures from yesterday (Click to enlarge):</p><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkqzKqE9sgBy-yidxW22oavF5vS1GosPF1bm0rI0JX_WYT-ksDZqtEc76cB1y0W9M3mC79nYsaCncN-4S7HDgYao7prKd7FpPXb-2FNIsv7xXiksBQ9vuxXbP58yUgAoYavfX-TefcfndY/s2048/1+-+What+a+north+facing+wasatch+snowtrap+looks+like.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkqzKqE9sgBy-yidxW22oavF5vS1GosPF1bm0rI0JX_WYT-ksDZqtEc76cB1y0W9M3mC79nYsaCncN-4S7HDgYao7prKd7FpPXb-2FNIsv7xXiksBQ9vuxXbP58yUgAoYavfX-TefcfndY/w300-h400/1+-+What+a+north+facing+wasatch+snowtrap+looks+like.JPG" width="300" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">What a north-facing Wasatch <br />snow trap looks like.<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJLGxAYmh3dovzr9IAF4u7rlzTXZ4sZFOlIXRrtDt4uQVeEnf0uso_QjcU47kJhPzUHTwrCF4H36gjth0MQcf569sBn5SphvJyti3atFs-4GCwLi0stcG5J8kQqJAWZ9dndRSLkY0oDJIL/s2048/2+-+Loki+by+Murdock+Pk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1247" data-original-width="2048" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJLGxAYmh3dovzr9IAF4u7rlzTXZ4sZFOlIXRrtDt4uQVeEnf0uso_QjcU47kJhPzUHTwrCF4H36gjth0MQcf569sBn5SphvJyti3atFs-4GCwLi0stcG5J8kQqJAWZ9dndRSLkY0oDJIL/w400-h244/2+-+Loki+by+Murdock+Pk.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Loki on the PC ridgeline. <br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4XtC3Afu8lL6kqVhLRTDbUwE1aDQF7_CaCG5-lc4fPIzJgJKw8WCxvFyD-GHp01MgHMK_wunA63hM_jbV5GVafEFHx541MokjW9nuMFClMFNUeEejgW_UbxbyldQI5_De62om7FgX2Ofx/s2048/3+-+Loki+at+Toll+Cyn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1273" data-original-width="2048" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4XtC3Afu8lL6kqVhLRTDbUwE1aDQF7_CaCG5-lc4fPIzJgJKw8WCxvFyD-GHp01MgHMK_wunA63hM_jbV5GVafEFHx541MokjW9nuMFClMFNUeEejgW_UbxbyldQI5_De62om7FgX2Ofx/w400-h249/3+-+Loki+at+Toll+Cyn.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Loki patiently posing while I shoot away.<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrM5nqV8qVTHBOEBm2yUs7KoyHtDOedL3AqmabkooMqy-rYu8AJkBC0Ux_TIBBUrml-GL6M-WSvNwxA4Zu_SEA6e6KkGGhawUCEjFneXpqIm6Dk3YB8Td9xEhXBjSNhB008Jj54TYjseO1/s2048/4+-+Winter+wonderland.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1290" data-original-width="2048" height="253" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrM5nqV8qVTHBOEBm2yUs7KoyHtDOedL3AqmabkooMqy-rYu8AJkBC0Ux_TIBBUrml-GL6M-WSvNwxA4Zu_SEA6e6KkGGhawUCEjFneXpqIm6Dk3YB8Td9xEhXBjSNhB008Jj54TYjseO1/w400-h253/4+-+Winter+wonderland.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">There are good objectives out there but they sure require <br />a fair amount of climbing/walking/skinning.<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Pierrehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11033519757551708324noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6997300292856098097.post-68627070659166807842020-11-22T14:40:00.003-07:002020-11-22T14:40:56.353-07:00First Tours of the 2020/2021 Season<p> after last week's storm, we had a decent snowpack for a while there. Here in the Wasatch, we know that anything can go, from hardly enough snow to properly ski the backcountry to epic winters where pretty much every ski day is a powder day. That's a big range. Hence the mix of anticipation and anxiety...<br />
<br />
So, it is quite the relief to see that the NOAA mountain forecast, as it stands right now, at 9,400' in Little Cottonwood Canyon (near to Alta) is really amazing. Here is the data (click to enlarge):<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A snow forecast is rarely looking much better than this!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of my favorite things to do on a good forecast: <br />
Go down the days and add up all the minimums and <br />
maximums expected an add them all up. Here we are<br />
looking at 2 - 4 feet in three days! And we are still <br />
only in November!</td></tr>

Now, from a distance, snow covers often look a heck of a lot better than up close. So, before I lug my skis all the way up there, I figured I invest in a hike and check it out up close. I hiked up under the lift and walked down Boa. And sure enough, it was a mixed bag. Although some parts were 1.5 feet deep others had very little snow. I decided to wait to ski it till next snowfall which hopefully is no more than a week or two out. Here are the pictures (click to enlarge):<br />

I found a bit more snow than expected. At the bottom of North Bowl and Todd's Bowls, there was about a foot - foot and a half on the north-facing. On the South Facing, on the other hand, mostly on or about zero snow. The "base" we now have on the north-facing is facetted and promises a long presence of the feared Wasatch deep-buried instability for months to come. In any case, here are a few pictures (click to enlarge):<br />

I got myself to the Aspen Grove trailhead (for above Sundance and started working my way up with skis and ski boots on my pack (<a href="http://the-whippet.blogspot.com/2017/09/the-mt-timpanogos-snowfield-is-back.html" target="_blank">for directions click here</a>). Temperatures were in the low teens when I started walking at 7am and it was snowing a fair amount. The forecast said it would end at about 10 - 11am, so I figured by the time I actually ski I would have a shot at some visibility and views. It is not the first time I do this but probably the gnarliest yet in terms of conditions. The higher I got the, less visibility and by the time I got off the mountain at a little before 4pm, although it had subsided a lot, it was still snowing. The pictures were not too many nor too great but here goes (click to enlarge):<br />

The downside to that is that this is probably the future deep buried layer of facets that in a couple of month will give us all sorts of instabilities. It is still darn nice to look at so here are some pictures I took this morning (click to enlarge):<br />

The snow wasn't as good as it was <a href="http://the-whippet.blogspot.com/2019/10/first-ski-of-20192020-season.html" target="_blank">Sunday</a>.
